CANARY INTERNATIONAL PICTURES
A vibrant hub for film and television production
The Canary Islands have become a vibrant hub for film and television production, attracting projects from all over the world due to its unique landscapes, favorable climate, and attractive tax incentives. Central to any production’s success is the collaborative effort between an executive producer and a production service manager, especially when developing in-house movies and series.
Executive Producer: Steering the Creative and Financial Vision
The executive producer (EP) plays a pivotal role in overseeing the entire production, ensuring that the creative vision aligns with the project’s budget and strategic goals. In the Canary Islands, the EP is typically involved from the initial stages of concept development through to final distribution, making high-level decisions that shape the scope and direction of the project.
For in-house movie and series development, the EP works closely with writers, directors, and showrunners to fine-tune scripts, secure funding, and attract key talent. They are responsible for liaising with financiers and investors, ensuring that the production maximizes the available local tax incentives and resources unique to the Canary Islands. Given the region’s distinct cultural and environmental attributes, an EP also explores how to incorporate these elements into the story to appeal to both local and international audiences.
A successful EP in the Canary Islands often blends creative oversight with business acumen, managing stakeholder expectations, and ensuring that the production meets both creative and financial benchmarks. They also play a crucial role in setting up long-term strategic partnerships with local production houses and international studios, fostering a network that can support multiple productions over time.
Production Service Manager: Bridging Logistics and Execution
The production service manager (PSM) is the backbone of day-to-day operations, ensuring that the EP’s vision is translated into actionable steps. In the Canary Islands, the PSM has a unique set of responsibilities due to the logistical challenges and opportunities presented by the archipelago’s geography.
For in-house development, the PSM manages everything from scouting and securing unique filming locations across the islands—ranging from volcanic landscapes to pristine beaches—to coordinating transportation and accommodation for cast and crew. They are responsible for liaising with local authorities to obtain permits, manage compliance with local regulations, and ensure that productions run smoothly within the timelines and budget constraints.
Moreover, a skilled PSM in the Canary Islands is deeply familiar with local talent pools, equipment suppliers, and service providers. This expertise allows them to streamline production workflows and anticipate potential challenges, such as unpredictable weather conditions or the need for specialized equipment for underwater and aerial filming. The PSM is often the main point of contact for international productions seeking local support, making them essential for bridging the gap between in-house teams and external collaborators.
Creating a Synergy for In-House Development
When developing in-house movies and series, the synergy between the EP and PSM is critical. The EP sets the vision and secures the resources, while the PSM ensures that these resources are utilized efficiently on the ground. This partnership is particularly advantageous in the Canary Islands, where productions can benefit greatly from local expertise to navigate the logistical and regulatory landscape.
Together, they enable the creation of high-quality content that leverages the unique backdrop of the Canary Islands, positioning the region as a prime destination for global filmmakers. As more in-house projects take root in the islands, the role of these two professionals will continue to be pivotal in driving the growth of a sustainable and dynamic film and television industry.
